Don't Move

Speaker
: Bishop Dr. Robert A. Merriwether, Sr.
Reference Text: Ruth 1:11-14
The word of God was perfect/complete as our leader preached today a “hook, line & sinker” (fishing for souls) message! He definitely grabbed our attention as we surrendered to the Divine One’s words!
“But Naomi said, turn back, my daughters; why will you go with me? Are there still sons in my womb that they may be your husbands? Turn back my daughters! Go, for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say I have hope, if I should have a husband tonight and should also bear sons, would you wait for them till they were grown?
Would you restrain yourselves from having husbands? No, my daughters; for it grieves me very much for your sakes that the hand of the Lord has gone out against me! Then, they lifted up their voices and wept again and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law but Ruth clung to her.”
During this period of judges from Samuel to King Saul, there was a famine in the land of Israel. Therefore, she and her husband, Elimelek (& 2 sons) sojourned into Moab, a country (which means in Hebrew to dwell temporary). While away there, her spouse and sons die!
Naomi convinced one of her Moabite daughters-in-law to leave her and seek a new life. Ruth refused, declaring her love and devotion to her! The text is a story with a couple of very powerful concepts: One is loyalty and the other is redemption!
Same with Abraham, Israel (or Jacob); they left in the time of starvation! The king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph, made their lives of harsh bondage until God raised up Moses to deliver His people!
The generational cycle began with “the father of many nations” to his descendants whom he never met. Abraham saw the beginning of self but not the ending! What you may not see in your son, you could see in your great, great grandchild whom you never knew! Be careful, because it doesn’t always begin with you but end up with your descendant(s)!
When God speaks, He can punish the children because of the father’s iniquities! —even to the 3rd and 4th generations! Be discreet not to embrace pride, rage, lust and addiction! Don’t settle for sin but be still and know that He is God!
According to the Bible, prior to the rise of the Israelite monarchy, the early Israelites were led by the Biblical judges who served as military leaders in times of crisis. Saul from the Tribe of Benjamin as the first king. The last king of all Israel before Jesus was Solomon. The final king of
Israel in Judea alone was Zedekiah!
A great thing for a child of God is to understand the seasons of situations! You can stay longer than you suppose to or leave a situation before its time! However, you must be in the will of our King and not attach your own feelings! Too many times, we rest on our emotions which can cause one to miss out (a job, home, investments, relationship, etc.)! Again, one can leave a predicament too early or stay in it too long!
God rejected Saul from becoming king, because he rejected the word of the Lord! He is not through with it (situation) so you shouldn’t be done with it! Naomi and her children were victims of Elimelek’s decision—It was not about his family! Have you ever been wounded due to someone else’s choice? Would it be a parishioner or pedophile? Governor or gangster? Drunk driver or careless caretaker?
The story of Jonathan, Saul's son: He had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up and fled; and it came to pass as she made haste to flee that he fell and became lame and his name was Mephibosheth. Learning point: Jonathan overcame his father’s bad example and opted to be a great example himself!
And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
God had judges for judiciary and His way was for Israel to be led by people like Deborah, Barak, Samson, Gideon and others) for the instruction of His people. However, a new king arose over Egypt who did not know Joseph.
He said to his people, 'Look, the Israelite people are more numerous and more powerful than we. Come, let us deal shrewdly with them or they will increase and, in the event of war, join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land. Exodus 1:8.
God can terminate something before it terminates you! What you thought was healthy and thriving, it was not pleasing to God! Don’t move, ARC! You can observe what’s happening for yourself! As mentioned in Ruth 1:7 -- “So she set out from the place where she was with her two daughters-in-law, and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah.”
Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back, each of you, to your mother's home. May the LORD show you kindness, as you have shown kindness to your dead husbands and me. We will go back with you to your people.”
God will not drag or beg you to come! But, whosoever will, let him come and drink from the fountain of life! Don’t be challenged to change your mind, commitment or condition! I got to go back to Canaan!
Like Naomi: Are you with me from what you can get or are you with me because of me? Some people follow Jesus for His miracles. Are you serving Him for what He has done or for who He is? Lord, anything you bless me with, I’ll be satisfied!
Can you say like Job: “Naked came I out of my mother's womb and naked shall I return thither. The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”
Are you willing to wait on God? David said “Wait on the Lord and be of good courage and He will strengthen your heart.” “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like an eagle…” You got to wait even when it’s crazy/ridiculous! There is a breakthrough...I come over here to stay, Lord, until I die! “He that shall come will come and not tarry.”
Rerun: “And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law. Had Ruth moved from Naomi, she never would have seen Jesus! When you follow Ruth, you will follow destiny...Don’t move!
Naomi saw that she could not change her mind! You can’t make me move! “I’ll go where you go; your people will be my people and your God, my God!” Because of Ruth’s faithfulness, God suspended the rules—not for a husband but because she was righteous!
Jesus is calling you to not move from His presence, love, power! “The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God.”
“I shall not, I shall not be moved. I shall not, I shall not be moved. Just like a tree that’s planted by the waters, I shall not be moved.” Don’t be moved by politics, government, family, friends, enemies, society, et al. Be still and know that I am God! He will elevate you in due time!
With our pastor he, indeed, have faith in the Almighty and approaches our Savior with freedom, confidence and boldness! Ephesians 3:12.
Thank God for his beloved wife, Lady Merriwether, (FLOTA) who is “the lighthouse for her husband, and he's the lighthouse for us.”
Sis. Jackie George: Profound appreciation, as always, for your consent, skills and time in recording this sermon (as well as all others) so effectively! Doing it in sections certainly make it easier to transcribe my notes. Love you, precious one!!
