A Necessary Embarrassment

Speaker: Bishop Dr. Robert A. Merriwether, Sr.
Reference Text: 2 Timothy 2:3
With our leader, preaching is not a profession but a passion! His words of wisdom, accompanied with his expressions of servitude, have stamped an impressionable mark in our lives!
The above sacred writ, “Thou, therefore, endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ,” is from Paul, reminding his spiritual son, Timothy, that the key elements in his teachings are vital to sound spiritual growth and development!
Timothy is encouraged to be strong in the grace of Christ Jesus and take to heart the insight and instructions that he gained from his mentor, Paul. Be aware that Satan loves to use shame as a tool of discouragement to make you forget God loves you unconditionally and has a purpose for you— despite the way things seem! Embarrassment is a doorway to grace and it is not the same as being ashamed. Shame is the handmaiden of guilt!
Lift up your bowed-down head, “O ye gate and be lifted up ye everlasting doors and the King of glory shall come in…”
Sometimes, we get “busted, disgusted, rejected, dejected and neglected!” No one can get into adulthood whole without consequences! Concerning the golden things in life, we must understand that there will be humiliation, hurt and embarrassment! Such things are necessary and healthy to experience!
“It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes” (Psalm 119:71). Also, “If Your law had not been my delight, then I would have perished in my affliction” (Psalm 119:92).
Although it’s good to think positive: Vacation, happiness, bonuses, etc., we must remember the importance of learning from God through affliction, misfortunates, unfairness, et al. It is for our growth/maturity in Him! Then, God’s divine will be accomplished in you!
Regarding God’s statues, there are no exchanges! Like with some recipes, you can replace ingredients—this for that! Repeat: No swapping for embarrassment, trials or tests! You ask the question: How do I endure hardness of a good soldier? How do you respond to people when they speak evil? Don’t retaliate with an “eye for an eye” or “tooth for a tooth!”
Immanuel is on our side, and we should not back down from the threats of the enemy! Humility, faith, a broken/contrite heart and the Word of God are defense tools against the adversary! When we have the authority and anointing from the Sovereign One, we can resist the devil and he will flee!
Some folk would run and leave when disrespected or intimidated! Or, you would ask yourself, how do I handle this situation? As declared in Job 1:21: Job understood that no matter what happens in life El Shaddai is still on the throne of heaven and knows how much we can bear! Therefore, even if or when everything goes bad in our lives, He is still worthy of our worship and praise!
How can I still be a blessing when the Lord takes or removes something, someone, season or place in my life? We must realize that these things are necessary (as conveyed)! Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and for evermore! From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same, The LORD's name is to be praised!
There are many vaccinations to protect yourself which also can reduce the risk of serious illnesses such as shingles, flu, HPV and Hepatitis B. Nevertheless, there is no vaccine for one’s tribulation nor dilemma! Know that no one can guide or guard you from heartaches but the I Am that I Am! Your parents, sister nor brother cannot shield you from obstacles!
As mentioned, there is a vaccination (the Word/power of the Lord) for hurt, pain, confusion and mistakes! Repeat: The Savior will never leave you nor forsake you! In this walk, there is no way you can prevent from having trials, sufferings or mishaps! Suffering is all “part of the package” in this life!
All flu vaccines currently available are quadrivalent vaccines. This means that they provide protection against the four most common flu virus strains that are predicted to be circulating—two influenza A strains and two influenza B strains.
Life is like a funnel! The wide way (the way that feels comfortable, easy, spacious, free. The narrow way (the way that looks uncomfortable, limited, hard, constricting …actually widens into joy, abundance, freedom!
Reiterating: There is just no way for you to escape from what you have been assigned to go through in life except through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
“Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief: when thou shalt make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand.”
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
You would have thought the writer (Isaiah) was referring to Lucifer, Satan or the enemy but No, he was talking about Jesus! God spoken: “And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
“Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus, therefore, saw His mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, He saith unto His mother, Woman, behold thy son!” Mary, the mother of Jesus came to rescue her Son!
It would be devastating to watch a mother’s son die or held in bondage and she can’t do anything about it! Julie Lythcott-Haims is the author of a book, “How To Raise An Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kids for Success.” Overbearing mothers can hover, criticize and overstep boundaries, which can lead to a host of challenges for their adult children including low self-esteem, dependence, and perfectionism.
A parent can even open up his/her bank account and bail his/her child out of jail. There are some things they need to go through—like with all of us!
Illustration: One can wear a protection vest as security even while you have your eyes in front of you, But, you alone, can’t watch your back! Many times, we can protect our front but not our back! Some people may have your back (but with knives)! Thus, you have to be wise and above all, believe God!
You can be penalized from someone else’s pain or problem! You were mishandled! In life, there are no time outs! Stop! That’s enough, mean boss! However, you can’t call a timeout! You were left astray but no time outs! Samuel had affection for Saul even though he was disobedient. God said: No more!
Either you can “pay back” (take matters into your own hands) or have “back pay” interest for tears, rejection, hurt and otherwise. Reminisce: There are no “war without wounds!”
When disappointments, trauma or any such thing invade your life, one can have PTST (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)! It is a psychiatric disorder that may occur in people who have been exposed or witnessed a traumatic event, series of events or set of circumstances. An individual may encountered this as emotionally or physically harmful or life-threatening and may affect his/her mental, physical, social and/or spiritual well-being!
Trust must be earned and not lost! Don’t blow it! Know who you are dealing with! Don’t give a person the benefit of a doubt because you can be deceived! First and first most, lean on the everlasting arms of Jesus!
“They that sow in tears, Shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” Psalm 126:5-6. Likewise, “If we suffer, we shall also reign with Him: if we deny Him, He also will deny us:” Be sure and be covered by our Protector—the all-seeing God!
Granted, our pastor is seen as God’s vessel clad with the whole armor of God, wearing his shield of faith and helmet of salvation—always carrying his sword of the Spirit (Word of God). His beautiful wife, 1st Lady, Shania Merriwether, also delves into the word of God & has an inner ear to embrace its precepts and serve the people naturally and spiritually!
Commendation: I’m grateful to Sis. Jackie George for recording the notes in my absence! She, indeed, is so capable and eager to comply with my wishes concerning our archives.
