Speaker:
Bishop Dr. Robert A. Merriwether, Sr.
Reference Text: Philemon 1:15-18
“BITE, BELIEVE AND BOAST” are chosen words for today’s message coming from our capable leader (as named above)! As written in God’s Holy Writ: “Oh taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed in the man that trust in Him!” With a far-reaching and anointed voice, the speaker directed our attention to the above text as stated below!
“For, perhaps, he, therefore, departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever; not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord? If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself. If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account…”
Paul requests that Philemon emancipate Onesimus and receive him as an admired brother! After he informed him, he neither wished to take advantage of his Apostolic authority nor command him to return said one. Nor, did he deceitfully compel his obedience by concealing the fact that he was a runaway slave but to consider God’s perspective!
Paul sent letters to the churches (Romans, First Corinthians, Second Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, First Thessalonians, and Second Thessalonians). He also was credited forwarding correspondence to 4 individuals: Philemon, Titus, I and II Timothy. There is explicit evidence that he employed the hand of a scribe to write the main body of some epistles.
In his communication to Philemon, Paul (from his own hand) said: “I will pay it back, and I will say nothing about what you owe me for your own life”! Although Paul knew the Lord, he actually was a prisoner in Rome! Again, his writing was to his friend on behalf of a slave (Onesimus) who was a run-away; he also had stolen money from Philemon!
Moreover, Paul was Philemon’s bishop/covering! He appealed to the latter who was a righteous man! It was on the basis of love that he had for all the saints and who would do anything for them! He even let them have church in his house! Paul's inspired letter to Philemon teaches a great lesson concerning Christian love! (Ephesians 4:32).
Under the Roman Law (not Jewish culture), governing slavery was used for whatever purpose the owner saw fit! Examples: An unclean woman; worshipping differently; blood sacrifice and other incidents! They also could be even crucified like Jesus! “If slaves should escape from their masters and take refuge with you, you must not hand them over to their masters.”
Philemon 1:5: Paul was glad to “hear of thy love and faith which thou hast toward the Lord
Jesus and toward all saints.” Verse 7 (same chapter): “Your love has given me great joy and encouragement because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people.”
When someone relieve you of a burden, it’s like a glass of cold water on a very hot day! Contentment denotes rest, peace and refreshment! Some folk don’t always deserve someone’s presence/aid! Is it due to ungratefulness? It’s easy to become exhausted/frustrated; thus, a break, nap, rest are needed! Where’s my pillow, mattress, blanket?
Philemon’s charity had an exhilarating impact on the saints! It’s challenging to love those who have wrong you! But, one’s empathy can be tested; e.g., a relationship in your home; marriage, family, etc. Furthermore, it’s apparent to pastor the “John’s more so than the Judas’s!”
Nothing is worse than a selected love! You love me when I’m good but not when I’m down and out! How about riches versus poor? Onesimus: You defrauded me, but I let you back into my life! With every fiber in your being, you forgave that person who killed, molested or done other harms to your loved-one!
With Christ, he’s perfect and all-powerful! Nothing is impossible for Him to accomplish! He has the ability and authority to prevail! Paul’s God-given authority could have been controlling, but he was not perceived that way!
If Paul made Philemon forget Onesimus, it would not be a true forgiveness! Paul was a wise leader who found love, worship, baptism and repentance real! If you force someone to do something, it will not last long! “I beseech thee for my son, Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds.”
You saw him as a slave but he’s coming back to you as a profitable man! When I was with him, he was a liability but now he’s an asset! Go from liability to resource; burden to blessing; prisoner to an independent! It’s not over until God says it’s over! You will be favorable this year...in that relationship...with good health, et al.
The number, “one” is significant! I went to a meeting one night and my heart wasn’t right but something got a hold of me! It’s one Lord, one Faith and one Baptism! The Father of all who is in us all and above all! His Name is JESUS! I and my Father are one! Your one battle can adjust your life to God’s will!
If you don’t trust God, it will make you sick...that’s a bad invasion! A good payback is surrendering to the Master! Then, too, you can assist by cleaning up your neighborhood...delete all the ungodly photos and messages! Philemon 1:13: “Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:” Granted, God’s Word can show you how powerful The Good News is!
Have you been out to eat and the waiter asked is this one check? Someone replies: I will pay the bill! He didn’t even ask the amount! One check is what I’ll pay—whatever the cost, debt, it’s one check! Another man will pick up the tab (for any situation) and His Name is JESUS! I had a dirty, nasty, filthy life, but the Rescuer forgave my sins when He died on the Cross!
One check even for my pride, murder, addiction, incest, etc. Paul said when sin abound, grace much more abound for me! One Check! Whatever it is, you can CHARGE IT to the Lord’s account! God said put it on the altar! Yes, you were bound, but He set you free!
I now love when I should have hated! Forgiven, when I did wrong! One check, please! I got it...I’ll pay for it...I’ll pick it up! I’m a crook, thief, no good, inconsistent, gambler, drunker, rambler, rolling stone but Jesus said CHARGE IT to Me! However, you must have faith, be humble and obey Him!
Who the Son sets free, is free indeed! I’ll take that! There are some good people who will take the wrap for you no matter how heinous the problem is. Be not a slave but slaveless! Have that spiritual interaction with God! Repeat: Paul was not advocating slavery nor talking against Christian service! Being born-again does not give you the right to break the law!
Someone may have something looming over your head—like Onesimus but repentance doesn’t stop the consequences but slow the processing down! You have unfinished business, give it to God who will cover you with His blood! “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are passed away and behold, all things are become new.”
Thank you, Watchman on the Wall, for fervently proclaiming the goodness of the Lord! Also, we honor your beloved wife, Shania Merriwether (FLOTA) who also serves the ministry with a willing heart!
