Sick In the Synagogue

Speaker:
Bishop Dr. Robert A. Merriwether, Sr.
Reference Text:
Luke 13:10-16
The above text delivered by our speaker today certainly encouraged us to have a connection to all people! He mainly dwelled upon the importance of our physical cure and spiritual healing of blessings, compassion, restoration and strength!
“...and, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity 18 years, and was bowed together and could in no wise lift up herself. When Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said unto her: Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.
And He laid His hands on her and immediately she was made straight and glorified God! The ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the Sabbath day and said unto the people: There are 6 days in which men ought to work; in them, therefore, come and be healed and not on the Sabbath day.
And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these 18 years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?”
Release from bondage is the key theme in this story. Surely, the Liberator can enable us to stand straight, freeing us from what bows our heads so that we see only the earth in front of us. The synagogue leader is afraid to take on Jesus; instead he rebukes the crowd for seeking a cure on the “Rest Day.”
In this story the woman is healed naturally and spiritually! We know that when we see, touch and announce freedom from burdens, it not only affects a physical deliverance but a pious one as well! Thus, it’s incumbent upon us to reach out to others when he/she is bound by both!
Remember when plagued with contingencies, our faith, failures, perseverance, embarrassment and all sorts of things are challenged! Again, here in the text, a woman was introduced by her condition! But, that makes it intriguing, because she found her way to the place of worship! Jesus would call her daughter of Abraham!
Companion Thought: “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.”
As stated in St. John 9:2: “And His disciples asked Him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man or his parents that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned nor his parents but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.”
In 5:14 (same above book), “For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool and troubled the water; whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.”
We can get insight of the depth of the constrained woman’s hardship but also faith! She went so far from a baseline that was recognizable! Speaking of release, Mark 5:9 expresses about the legions of demons! As Christians, we can take comfort in the knowledge that the forces of the enemy of our souls are under the complete control of God and can only act in ways He allows!
It’s dreadful to be controlled by conflict! You can’t even hear yourself talk nor recognize or speak to people you once knew? As mentioned, the woman suffered 18 years of not being erect! Any of us can get to a place of life’s struggles! But, we have to muster up enough faith and strength to trust the Lord!
Similar Thinking: When you look into the mirror and can’t see yourself anymore is very frightening—going from independent to dependent….eating to not eating whereas the body eats up itself! Rest assure, it’s not the stature or looks of a person! They, too, can be unforgiving; full of rage, anger; a snitch, deceptive, procrastinators, etc.
Proverbs 24:16 verbalizes: “For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.” Moreover, “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked; who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9).
Psalm 39:5 mentions: “Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth and mine age is as nothing before thee: Verily, every man at his best state is altogether vanity.” Yes, you can be sick and reside in the ship! There are different levels of sins and illnesses!
When sick in the hospital, the medical staff can put you on contact precaution! Any of us can be susceptible to sin, weakness and diseases. Even if you have health care insurance, that doesn’t make you immune to conditions!
But, jealousy, suicide and a bad attitude can affect anybody whether you’re saved or not! Give the Master the glory of your life by fighting the good fight of faith! As realize, Satan let Jesus alone for a season! Don’t think that he’s not coming back!
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, the rulers of the darkness of this world and against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
Don’t allow filthy, vain nor evil thoughts, put you in a “choke-hold!” To be spiritually and naturally healed, it takes a sterile process! O Lord, sterilize me...my mind, mouth, thoughts, household, friends; anyone! Set the captive free! There is enough power in the synagogue for restoration, rejuvenation and improvement!
If one is injured, all of us should be injured! If you’re happy, I’m happy...If you’re sad, I’m sad! Purge me, O God, with hyssop and make me whiter than snow! Set your captive free, dear Father! Physically speaking, call the DPR (A doctor–patient relationship) and do CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)! Don’t give up on me...I need HELP...I want my soul, mind and body to be rescued!
The (synagogue or church) is the right place for broken people! The pastor attested that he knows what death feels like! No one is going to be dead around me! We surely want to rise, shine and give God the glory! If the devil is messing with you, he’s messing with me!
Matthew 11:12: “And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.” We need to defend ourselves and others, too! Fight for your life (with Jesus as your stronghold); also your home, health, spouse, children, parents, pastor, 1st Lady, grandchildren, etc. The altar is also for “fighting!”
Satan doesn’t care who he attack including those who are active in church: Singing, preaching, teaching, ushering, etc. He is a liar and the truth is not in him!
Precisely, our pastor emphasizes that: “All Scriptures are breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness.” 2 Timothy 3:16. Thank you, sir, for this “wake-up-and-hear” message! We also honor his beloved wife, Shania, for her strong support in every facet of Christianity!
I also take this opportunity to thank Sis. Jackie George for recording today’s sermon! I deeply appreciate her love, time and services in bringing this assignment to completion!
