Judges
4:1-9, 22, 23
Your writer believes that the readers can call today’s message a “Winner never quits and a quitter never wins” type of sermon! Our leading lady (as named above) preached from the depths of her heart about completing your responsibility/goal/mission! It was like “honey from a honeycomb” (the sweetness of God’s Holy Writ)!
The topic, as indicated, was the theme for the last day of Women’s Conference Week (March 5-12, 2023)! Preceding texts were: “While on Assignment, Mind Your Business” (Sunday, by Police Chief, Stella Patterson); “Faith for the Assignment” (Tuesday); “Let All Be According To Thy Word” (Wednesday); “Power for the Assignment” (Friday) and “Praying is the Assignment” (Saturday)
Judges talks about how Israel was delivered from the bondage of their enemies under the direction of a female warrior named Deborah, who was both a judge and prophetess! She prophesied that a woman would destroy the enemy's leaders!
“...and she said, I will surely go with thee; notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honor; for the Lord shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman, and Deborah arose and went with Barak to Kedesh…”
The story of Deborah also reveals that the Lord calls ordinary people to do extraordinary things! Her prophecy was fulfilled when she led Sisera, the commander of King Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his troops to the Kishon River and gave him into Barak’s hands!
You don’t have to leave anything incomplete! After Joshua’s death, Israel remained in Canaan. There are many bad cycles (or times in life) one can experience: Compromise, hypocrisy, relationships, fear, etc.! There is nothing new under the sun. The enemy will perfect his tricks and some of us are like the cycles of life—in and out or “straggling the fence!” But seek to “Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.” When standing our ground, we are conquerors!
Israel got comfortable because their enemy was subdued! Don’t take your eyes off the enemy! Just because he is low-key, don’t let your guard down but stay complacent or confident in God! You may have defeated the invader last week but don’t stop being cautious and prayerful! We must watch/pray to complete the calling (whether naturally or spiritually) that God wants us to do!
Deborah understood what God summons her to achieve! When He spoke to her the instructions, she didn’t hesitate to comply! She was not only a woman of wisdom, revelation, discernment, faith, excellence but a wife! She knew the time and season of the Lord. She was known as a kingdom woman—an individual whose mind was concerning God’s dominion!
When you’re doing God’s business, you don’t have time to waste. Ask yourself: “Is it worth my time?” Time is a precious commodity and should be valued and used wisely! Also, time flushed is nonproductive; my time is important! If you say something, make sure that it’s worth my time!
Repeat: God gave Deborah a plan. She operated in integrity! She agreed to go to war with Barak. She had to tell the truth! She was transparent that her undertaking was vital—facilitating other people for the victory! She had to understand her role as a supporter!
Our orator added that there are different kinds of credits: 1) Full credit (turning in your assignment on time. 2) Late credit (one don’t get full credit but you receive some credit). 3) Extra credit (rewarded extra points for your grade). One certainly can miss out on his/her full potential when you want to “just get by!”
Some students are satisfied with just the bare minimum—just enough to succeed...some don't mind the mediocrity (average) and then they’re others who want to be at the top of their class! I want to live so that my cup is running over! I want to do exceedingly, abundantly more than we can ask or think—fulfilling my assignment(s) to the maximum!
Barak had witnessed the iron chariots but Deborah understood the power of showing up, rising to the occasion! Deborah had to have the faith to show up! The value of presence is important! The one who shows up is the one who cares (like Joshua and David). The Lord can give you the power to implement your assignment; e.g., prayer, tithing, witnessing, worship, etc. When you show up, God shows up and will show OUT!
Whatever is God’s will, Lord, send me and I’ll go! Thus, being a blessing to myself and others! When Deborah decided to go to war with Sisera, no man was left! “Howbeit, Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite and Sisera was killed by her, who hammered a tent peg into his temple!
What is the “howbeit” OR “nevertheless” in your life? It can be positive or negative! We should have something to fight for! “Be that it may, nevertheless,” I will not continue with something that was contrary in the past—only things that were/are good! Look at your howbeit...address the issues! We got unfinished business to take care of!
Some opponents are weary, worry; can’t take another punch! Let me get the enemy with the “Sword” (Bible) when he/she is tired so that I can finish my assignment! End that assignment for a house, grad school, writing a book, etc. Let it be a strong finish! “I had fought a good fight; I have finished the course...I have kept the faith…” Jesus said on the cross: “It is finished” when he died for our sins!
I’m a new creature! My off-springs shall see the positive results! You’re not finished if consuming alcohol, drugs, gambling, having an evil spirit. But, we need to apply our lives according to God’s commandments so that the job can be pleasing in His sight!
God knows how to pull you to the altar but He can make something happen when you disobey! “And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD: for he (Sisera) had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.”
