Hell In the Whale

Speaker:
Bishop Dr. Robert A. Merriwether, Sr.
Reference Text:
Jonah 2:1-2
Grappling Iron—Not At Straws! That statement certainly can be used as a metaphor regarding our overseer’s message today! Bishop is strong and mighty with the Word of God (his defense) vs. clutching at straws (which typifies worthless, inflammable material (Exodus 15:7; Job 13:25).
The word hell is defined as eternal punishment (Matt. 25:41) and a well denotes water! Those two words “hell” and “well” point us to Jonah's belly-of-hell experience! It shows how he allowed his disobedient to face total isolation from everything holy and pure!
“Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish's belly, and said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and He heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.”
During his sea journey, a great storm appears, and Jonah is thrown overboard and swallowed by a huge fish (or whale). He remains in the belly of the fish for three days and nights until he asks God for forgiveness. Jonah's rescued completed his mission in Nineveh with some reluctance!
This minor prophet was told by the Lord to warn the people in Nineveh that their city would be destroyed if they did not repent! But, the people of Nineveh were enemies to the Israelites. Jonah did not want to preach to them. So, he got on a ship to sail far away from Nineveh!
While Jonah was on the ship, a big storm came. The men on the ship were afraid for their lives! They asked Jonah to pray to the Lord to save them! Jonah 1:4-6. He knew God’s voice! When the Savior speaks, correct or gives instruction, it’s important! Remember, that obedience is the key to promotion, break-through and manifestation!
When you hear His voice, it can be a choice and challenging! Our Redeemer speaks from a global perspective! Since we are many members, everyone can be affected of our actions (whether good or bad).
When communing with the Chief Cornerstone, it may not always be a “sugar-coated” conversation, but we must have a broken and contrite heart in which He will not despise!
The Bible mention many individuals of God’s speaking: “Abram, get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee.” Also, He told Sarai that she would conceive Isaac. Moreover, He conveyed to Mary that she would carry the Christ Child! The Anointed One consulted and instructed Moses to tell Pharaoh to let My people go!
Then, too, there was Jesus when He bid Peter to walk on the water! Likewise, He conversed with Noah and so many more! When the Lord says something, how can you prepare for something you’ve never seen before? Remember: “God said it, I believe it and that settles it!”
“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness; God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world and received up into glory.” I Timothy 3:16.
Jonah turned against Nineveh but not God! The Supreme Being saw their works and He relented. God honored Ninevah’s repentance, even though their past sin was reason enough for an outpouring of judgment! That city had a population of 120,000 people!
If you don’t be obedient to His voice, you can’t testify of His power! Certainly, He can deliver your feelings, emotions; process; thoughts, etc. Yes, Jonah was challenged by God! As declared in Isaiah 53:8: “He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare His generation? for He was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was He stricken.”
The prophet had a hard time receiving the Lord, because He was higher than his emotions, intellect, strategies, et al. Reiterating: When he rose up from Tarshish, he fled from God but there was no hiding place for him! You can’t run from God who is everywhere!
Psalm 139:7-10: “Whither shall I go from Thy spirit? Or, whither shall I flee from Thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, Thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, Thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall Thy hand lead me, and Thy right hand shall hold me.”
There is no escaping! You can’t withdraw through “Jack Daniels” liquor; drugs, daydreaming, sleep, isolation, etc. God has an ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis -- a therapy based on the science of learning and behavior) on you or a Warrant! “…But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth and cry mightily to God. Yes, let every one turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.” (Jonah 2:3).
Jonah was trying to pave his way out of God’s will! There is a cost to pay whether you’re in or out of El Shaddai’s presence! It will cost you your mind, body, suffering or whatever! You will be no more when outside His will! “For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Don’t be a “Chicken Christian” (or scared individual)! Or, even a “tizzy” (anxiety)! Be brave and trust God! We must go through trials and tribulation!
“Confirming the souls of the disciples and exhorting them to continue in the faith and that we must, through much tribulation, enter into the kingdom of God.” If we suffer, we shall also reign with Him: if we deny Him, He also will deny us.” II Timothy 2:12. Choose your payment plan! Salvation is free but discipleship will cost you!
Count up all the cost, it takes to serve Jesus, Jonah chose to go out of coverage or range! You can be in a network whether you’re in or out! If the latter, it will cost you more! It’s cheaper to come “home than roam!”
Isaiah 61:3 says: “To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified.”
“A broken and contrite heart God will not despise.” There is a blessing in your breaking! When God breaks us, it’s not reckless but a prestigious breaking! It’s done more strategically—purposely. Immanuel could have used other things to get Jonah out of the boat but He ordered the Word!
Acts 2:2 “And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.” The Almighty can use the “wind” to get stuff out of us. What manner of man is this that even the winds obey Him!
Where are you at spiritually? Low, middle, upper middle; or upper class? Don’t live below the class—you want to be upgraded! Jonah 1:5 explains: “Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But, Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay and was fast asleep.”
What’s in your life that you can’t see or identify? The mariners threw cargo out of the ship to lighten the load but that didn’t work! Without our Helper, you can’t choose what needs to go and what doesn’t! Some of our lives were rocky and chaotic! The cargo was not the issue but Jonah was!
You must discharge that person if they are a hinderance in your walk with God! If not, you will still have “cargo” in your life! Don’t throw your ministry, life or something good for a bad cargo (people, things, burdens, weights, popularity, bad influences; pride, etc.)! You have a new Master—The I Am That I Am! Just like the Ship Master came to Jonah, He can come to you!
Some people will disregard morals, standards, values just for the sake of money, advancement, friendship, prestige, etc. What about leaving your all to follow Jesus! “Stop and Drop” (Leave behind the world and go to God in prayer)!
How much time have you given to God? The enemy can sneak upon you and you wouldn’t even know it! Whoever or whatever you comfy in that is your master! Jonah was in a precarious spot because he left the Lord! It’s time to prioritize your life or re-prioritize your priorities! Without Him, we would be nothing!
I’m tired of running, hiding, dodging, slipping and sliding! The Lord has spoken to us supernaturally!! Lord, use every window of our life to get “stuff” or sin out of us in Jesus’ precious name!
Indeed, our souls were satisfied with marrow, fatness and a dinner of herbs! We thank our “server” for feeding us with manna from on High—sustainable food for our growth and development in Him! With him and his beautiful wife, Shania Merriwether, their vision enlivens us…compassion inspires us and their commitment to God and each other makes us so proud!
