Treating Trauma

Speaker:
Bishop Dr. Robert A. Merriwether, Sr.
Today’s message was both a teaching & preaching format concerning the natural and spiritual heart of man confronting shock/agony/confusion! Our beloved pastor fed us with healthy portions of God’s Word for growth, deliverance and development!
As known, the physical heart is an organ in the body that pumps blood throughout the veins. Whereas, the spiritual heart embodies a level of consciousness unto itself. Most importantly, it is the key to our greatest fulfillment and the doorway to experiencing a deeper relationship with our Creator. The latter represents life (Jesus) or death (devil)!
Once again, we can have a heart organ (if defective, can lead to natural death)! Plus, a spiritual heart which can be competent or corrupt! Jesus told the prophet that He would take away the stony heart and put a new heart that He can mold or work with!
Trauma (or suffering) is an emotional response which can last long after an event occurs, causing significant mental and physical stress! There is a good chance that the person next to you has been a recipient of agony, hurt and pain with side effects (consequences/aftermath)!
How do you handle dire situations? Accept Jesus as your Savior! You may have many girlfriends or boyfriends but you have only one heart! You don’t want a bad relationship with a cold-heart! A heart does not resist itself! When in a new season, one must reset his/her heart and then carry that same heart (mindset) to the next relationship! Needless to say, countless people have endured lingering effects!
There is a psychological rotation called PTSD (Post Traumatic Syndrome Disorder)! It is causing much dilemma in your life! Understand the power of a positive response is necessary! If I know how life works, we, therefore, have a responsibility to recover! It’s not in the hand of your family/friends but YOU!
The recovery phase is up to you! As mentioned, the greatest backlash is how you reciprocate with your faith—hopefully, in a productive way! Acknowledge that you were wounded but have the confidence that this, too, shall past! Yes, trauma is a war against one’s mind! As forestated, how do you answer back to negative occurrences? Is it the event of the events with its consequences?
Medication has reaction! The goal of the enemy is to crush you! Adam was guilty of eating the fruit. However, recall all the ramifications that were before him--just from that one event! He didn’t have to “nibble” such a small thing! Don’t forget it’s the “little foxes that destroy the vine.” Solomon 2:15-17. Little foxes in that context refers to those sins, attitudes and habits that we more often overlook, excuse or defend!
Reiterating: One heart! You may have a new fear but no new heart! The “same” heart goes into another year! Every sin that easily beset you can cause repercussions! You can suffer a chain-reaction from panic! The person who follows you can be your opposer: A spouse that cheated on you; your children, job, best friend, neighbor, etc.
Sometimes, we take ordeals into the community; intense matters are also detected in our preaching, playing an instrument or ushering in church. Stop following me, devil! You can’t take control of my heart! The enemy is like a “tracker.” He can put an “air-tag” on where you want to go! Remove it!! Transgressor: I’m not going to allow you to follow me—nowhere!
Trauma is like a shadow which is a dark version of you! It can and will threaten you to bring out the dark side of anyone! Nobody is immune from a ugly side! Paul said in I Corinthians 10:12: “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall…”
Romans 7:18 declares: “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do…”
One can be nasty and then try to cover it up! You are “nice-nasty!” Even if you laugh, you’re guilty! If you want to be nice…be nice! If Lucifer gets our heart, everything else is out of control! Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment, and the second is: Love your neighbor as yourself.”
Be cognizant that the adversary will use tactics to manipulate your heart! There is no separation from your shadow! No matter how fast you can run, you cannot outrun your shadow! You can’t disconnect yourself from the fear that haunts you! Stay close to the Lord so that He can keep your heart and mind! You can only see the shadow in the light!
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105. Indeed, the Word of God can reveal the dark side of one! But, the light of Christ will expose the bad side of a pretender: Whereas, you stop going to church, fasting, praying, etc. When the sun shines, it doesn’t ask if you want your shadow to be revealed! What’s done in the dark will come to light!
Be glad when the Truth finds you! Don’t settle for something that will “tickle” your ears! Reject those who will be your stumbling block: Man, woman, money, alcohol, drugs or whatever! Surrender your life to Him and be not a problem of yourself! You’re accountable for the ungodly acts that you do! We must be rehabilitated from all evil!
Tricked, hurt and disrespected and you can’t feel God, humble yourself before Him! “I ain’t talking about you unless it’s you” (as quoted often by the late Bishop Edward C. Roberts)! Get back to the altar! The heart is under attack! Be sensitive, convicted and go to the Throne of Grace!
Your soul is most valuable! You make business meetings but not Prayer Services! This is serious and it doesn’t matter how old you are! An undesirable heart can drive you to hell! If it’s clean, it will take you to heaven! Don’t be in a “pickle!” You can be revived! Let the Lord perform heart surgery on you! It’s not worth going to the Lake of Fire for lust, hate or any offenses!
“Create in me a clean heart, O God and renew a right spirit within me.” Inspect my heart! I’ve been anointed to serve and do the right thing! Father: Let your presence have free course in my life! In the fullness of the Almighty is joy forevermore!
Effectively, our pastor’s untiring and self-sacrificing service to the people typify a pattern of due diligence! Moreover, we certainly petition God in our 1st Lady’s behalf for continued strength, well-being and a “rose” along the way as, she, too, gives a “Lion’s portion” of the Lord’s work!
