My Response to Persecution

Speaker:
Bishop Dr. Robert A. Merriwether, Sr.
Reference Text:
Acts 8:1
An accomplished analyst of the Word, a great advocate for the Lord and unshaken defender of the Faith is our beloved pastor! Today, (like always) his message was a “Think and Thank” sermon (giving thought and gratitude to that which is good)!
“And Saul was consenting unto his death and at that time, there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, EXCEPT the apostles.”
The Book of Acts is, according to teachers of the Bible, events of the Holy Spirit! It also records the burial of Stephen, the beginnings of Christian persecution and the spread of the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
Saul (later called Paul) was in agreement with the Jews who stoned Apostle Stephen to death! He watched their (accusers) garments while they committed murder! Saul also was someone who not only participated in the stoning of Stephen, but gave approval for the execution of the church!
Count it a blessing when you suffer as a Christian! This shows that God's glorious power is with you! It is better to choose humility than to be compelled to be humble because of circumstances! The disciples of Christ willingly obeyed His commandments and made sacrifices (Luke 14:25–33).
Christians may suffer in different ways: Some through the waters...flood…fire but all through the blood! We cannot relate to everyone’s experience, but all must go through the blood! Romans 8:18 says: “I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”
Reminder: God can reveal things to you through suffering! Because the saints were persecuted, Israel scattered throughout the region and were flushed away from their own land. However, God took Joseph from the “pit to the palace.” David from a “shepherd boy to a king;” Moses from being “born in Egypt to leading the Israelites.” No matter what you experience, the Holy One is in control!
God uses His Word to transmit the Good News! It (Truth) was not meant to only rest in Jerusalem! Jesus told the apostles: “You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth” – these are the last documented words Jesus spoke to His disciples before He ascended into heaven (Acts 1:8).
The fact is to know that God is able to keep you in a midst of chaos/crisis! The adversary can’t destroy you but realize that for God I live and for God, I’ll die! Jesus is my anchor! I’m going to stand flat-footed because God’s purposes are good! I will walk and think differently now!
Understand this: The inspiration of your life is not determined by the opposer but by the God-Giver! I’m so glad that trouble doesn’t last all ways! You survived; whereas some died! With Rapha, deliverance can come instantly or via a process!
It’s one thing to be chastised, knowing your expectation date will end! Another matter is to be reprimanded until further notice (not knowing when)! With the Israelites, their exile lasted 70 years! The challenge is watching others being released while you remain isolated! One may be diagnosed with Bell’s palsy and was restored but there are individuals who may be stricken extensively!
The butler and baker experienced freedom while Joseph remained in prison! If anyone who deserved recognition, it was Joseph! The apostles had backing because they stayed put! Satan told God that Job would curse Him to His face! But Job was patient and declared all the days of my appointed time, I will wait until my change has come!
Once more, the followers of Christ did not seek rescue but remain there in Jerusalem! Let us prevail in fasting, prayer, faithfulness, honoring the “I Am that I Am” and to maintain a strong mindset! “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him…” I cried many nights, but I will remain! I wrestled with problems in my life (grief, deterioration, agony, etc.) but I remained!
Anybody ever be on the mountain top? How about the valley? Can you stay in a house or be homeless? What about being the lender and not the borrower? Lord, send me, I’ll go! I will remain hopeful...grateful...obliged! Although the enemy did it, he had to get God’s permission! Satan is an employee of God! He will or can place Satan in your life! “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord…”
Demon, you can’t move me! “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper…” I am not scared of you! “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” I’m not going to run! “Our God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think.” God said it, I believe it and that settles it! “Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
With God, there are 5 seasons (not 4): Spring, summer, fall, winter and “New Season.” You will change season but remain faithful! “Because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things.” “Don’t stop praying for the Lord is nigh…” “Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord.” “The battle is not yours but the Lord’s!”
Put down your knife/gun and let God fight for you! “If I hold my peace and let the Lord fight my battles; victory shall be mine!” The Lord is my Shepherd but you got to stay right there...don’t move! I have to REMAIN but my responses are praise, prayer and worship! Don’t relapse but STAY PUT!
I thank God for keeping my mind, spirit, body! I should have been crazy/dead but He has kept me in perfect peace! Reiterating: Remain with Him! “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness...” As stated, everybody scattered but the apostles! You cannot get an exceptional blessing unless you are the “exception!”
Pulpitarian: You are, indeed, a godsend to us—sent from the heavens above to educate and guide us righteously! Thanks, again for sharing the Word... God bless you & Lady Merriwether always!
